Since people were shorter100 years ago the mattress may also need to be made shorter on older bed frames. Many foreign beds are made to metric measurements and so a British standard sized mattress  or base manufactured in imperial measurements will not fit. Forcing a larger mattress into a smaller frame will ruin the mattress and stress the older bed frame weakening the joints.
